There are numerous tea gardens around the small town of Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka. The city is lined with mountains where fine black teas are grown. Due to the pleasantly cool climate, the place was once a recreation area for the British colonial power. This growing area produces so-called highland teas, as the plants grow at over 1,200m altitude. The tea gardens are usually located on steep slopes and the leaves are picked by hand. There are ideal conditions for the growth of the tea plant - plenty of sun, lots of rain and high humidity. Due to the low temperatures, the plants grow very slowly and thus produce very high-quality teas. The leafe grading FOP stands for Flowery Orange Pekoe and describes besides the leaf size, also the quality. The leaf size Pekoe indicates whole or hardly broken leaves. Flowery describes the flower buds, which stands for particularly high quality.
