The tea garden Okayti is located near the city of Mirik, approx. 45km from Darjeeling city. The area is located in the outer west of Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal at the base of the Himalayas. Tea has been harvested there since 1888. Originally founded by the British it is now in the hands of the Indian family Kumbhat. They grow tea on 208 hectare between 1.400 and 2.000m above sea level. This makes Okayti one of the highest tea gardens in the area which provides ideal climatic conditions and best tea quality. It is also one of the most beautiful gardens, surrounded by a picturesque landscape of hills, tall pine trees and a view of the impressive mountain range of the Himalayas, as well as the river Mechi which travels through this area. The name Okayti originates in its British heritage: its original name was Rungdoo but the batches of tea traded at the London auction were handled as “the only okay tea” which eventually turned into “Okayti” – its current name. Enjoy this fine First Flush tea, which was harvested on 30th March 2019 during springtime temperatures between 17 and 23°C.
